Adapting an existing bus model to the needs of a modern city.
Brief
Adapt the existing SamAuto bus model to the needs of a modern city.
Design research
We explored four directions: a low-floor platform for older passengers, people with disabilities and parents with prams; a new interior layout balancing capacity and comfort; new technology — electric or hybrid drive, light and strong composites; and optimised parts that are simpler to produce, assemble and repair.
Styling and layout
We prepared several sketch options for the exterior and layout, chose materials and the structural concept, and built a mock-up to check ergonomics.
Engineering
We developed a CAD model with detailed assemblies. It brought together all the earlier decisions and became the basis for a full prototype.
Prototyping
We found contractors to make some of the parts from our models. The main prototype assembly took place at the client’s plant under our supervision.
